Interpreting the Magician Tarot Card
The Magician understands that he has the power to manipulate life in any which way he pleases, and like magic, he has the ability to decide which experiences will and will not affect him. Although he can not control the unpredictable nature of life, he can control his own responses to every circumstance he encounters. In a world which is built upon uncertainty, the Magician embodies the only form of absolute control one can master: control over one's self. Experiences shape who and what we become, and the Magician is naturally meticulous in selecting what outside forces play a significant role in his life. He creates the conditions which govern his existence by actively filtering out what is not beneficial to his personal growth and well-being. It can be argued that negativity only breeds more negativity, which the Magician is well aware of. The innermost desires of the Magician are exclusively concerned with what is good and what is positive in life, refusing to concentrate on or be consumed by self-defeating interests. Thus the Magician is also a symbol of transformation, as he takes the world in his hands and shapes it like clay into the form he wishes it to be. Unlike the Fool, the Magician is not naive, but is actually well aware of the polarities of good and evil existing in all things. He simply does not allow negativity to infiltrate his thoughts. This power of will is represented by the wand he raises to the heavens, his arm straight and confident, connecting his own strength with that of the higher universe above him. The Magician understands his position in the universal scheme of events, but his ability to manipulate and control his environment lends him a degree of power in determining his own fate.
